Drugs: Nigerian Student Gets Death Sentence

A female Nigerian student was sentenced to death by the Malaysian High Court yesterday after she was found guilty of trafficking 765.9gm of methamphetamine at the KL International Airport (KLIA), four years ago.

The decision was made against 30 year old Mary George Unazi by Judge Datuk Ghazali Cha after the prosecution managed to prove its case against her beyond a reasonable doubt.

In his judgement, Ghazali said the accused’s defence was merely a bare denial and that the private college student had also failed to prove that the bag containing the drug was not hers.

Unazi was found to have committed the offence at the baggage claim area at the international arrival hall of KLIA on May 10, 2011.

She was charged under Section 39B (1) (a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 of Malaysia which carries a mandatory death penalty upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor, Siti Noorbaya Jamil, prosecuted, while Unazi was represented by lawyer Sangeet Kaur Deo.
